Viktoryia Mialeshka.

Editorial & brand systems designer

I start with the content, not the reference. I find what has to stay constant and turn it into a rule the rest can be built on. Five years across consulting, beauty and e-commerce, usually as the only designer on the project.

03 Practice

The through line in my work is not a look. It is where I start.

  1. 01Where I work

Consulting and professional services, editorial series that run for years, beauty at catalogue scale, and campaigns that have to hold across web, social and print. A 122-page flagship report, eight issues of an editorial publication, a 500-SKU catalogue across three markets, made with marketing, UX and editorial teams across seven countries. Most of it is long-form, and most of it has to keep working after I hand it over. Modelling, simulation and the edit are done in-house rather than commissioned out.

  2. 02What I’m handed

Material made by different people that has to end up sounding like one voice. Volume that cannot be made one page at a time. Dense content that still has to be read to the end. A good idea that does not work yet, where the job is to make it work rather than to replace it. And techniques the team has not used before, which have to be explained as well as made.

  3. 03What I hold

The constant in my work is conceptual, not visual. Across eight issues the forms changed, the abstraction changed, the flat plane became 3D. What never changed was that every image stayed tied to a human being. A series is held together by what it is about, not by what it looks like. And the rules go into the file, not into someone’s head: three 50+ page guideline books are why a 500-SKU catalogue ships without me in the room.

  4. 04How I decide

I start with the content, before deciding how anything looks. I extend rather than replace: if an existing idea is right, my job is to make it work, not to overwrite it. I make the variable part of a system derive from meaning, not mood. And when an idea cannot be explained, I build a fragment of it and show it. The fastest way to get a decision is to take the risk off the person making it.

04 About

I set the visual direction, and ship the files.

Bio

Editorial and brand-systems designer with five years across consulting, beauty and e-commerce. I am drawn to editorial systems, where one decision about a grid has to hold a hundred spreads together.

Five years in, the thing that changed most is where I start. Early on I would begin by making. Now I begin by working out the structure of the problem, and I spend far more of a project explaining and defending decisions than executing them. I have learned the difference between a disagreement about taste, which is worth a compromise, and a disagreement about quality, which is not.

At frog I was the sole designer on Design Mind, frog’s editorial publication: layouts, covers, motion graphics and social cutdowns for every article and episode across all 8 issues. I defined its illustration system from scratch, and I stood in for the Art Director during leave, running creative reviews for a 3-person design team across 3 concurrent projects.

Before that I rebuilt Farmasi’s 500-SKU catalogue and the brand system around it for Poland, Czechia and Slovakia. The Nutriplus launch format I built there was replicated by other Farmasi markets, a first for the brand. I designed The Scale Effect, Capgemini Invent’s 122-page flagship report, as one of two designers working alongside the Art Director.
